Hamburg Mint (Hamburgische Münze) — gold marks with a coat of arms
Number of products: 1The Hamburg Mint — the Hanseatic letter "J"
Hamburg, as a free Hanseatic city, struck its own coin for centuries — and on joining the German Empire in 1871 it kept that privilege. In the system of imperial mints the Hamburg mint received the letter "J", a mark still found today on euros struck in Hamburg.
Gold 20 marks with the Hamburg coat of arms
Hamburg gold marks have exactly the same parameters as the Prussian ones — 20 marks is 7.965 g at 900 fineness, that is about 7.17 g of pure gold — but a completely different obverse. As a city republic Hamburg had no monarch, so instead of an emperor's portrait the coins bear the city coat of arms supported by two lions. That makes the Hanseatic issues (Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck) the most recognisable exception among the gold of the Empire, and a point of interest for collectors — with the same metal content as the marks bearing an emperor.
The coins were real circulating money, so they are priced by metal content, and natural traces of circulation do not affect the amount of gold.
The range at GoldInvest24

FAQ — the Hamburg Mint
What is the Hamburg Mint?
The mint of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which has marked its coins with the letter "J" since 1875 — a mark still used on German euro coins struck in Hamburg.
How much gold does a Hamburg 20 marks contain?
7.965 g at 900 fineness, that is about 7.17 g of pure gold — exactly the same as the Prussian 20 marks.
How do Hamburg marks differ from Prussian ones?
Only in the obverse. As a city republic Hamburg had no monarch, so instead of an emperor's portrait the coins bear the city coat of arms supported by two lions. The metal content is identical.
