Why this bar

  • Certificate included — the producer adds an official certificate of authenticity to the blister
  • Struck markings — logo, weight, 999.0 fineness and assayer's mark on the front
  • A refiner acting as LBMA referee — Argor-Heraeus is one of seven refiners that oversee the Good Delivery programme
  • Same footprint as the 100 g bar — both measure 49.7 × 28.5 mm and differ only in thickness — 2.3 mm against 7.2 mm

Argor-Heraeus — a refiner from Ticino

Emilio Weiss and Elvio Zoppi founded the company in 1951 as Argor SA. In 1986 the Heraeus Group joined and the firm became Argor-Heraeus SA. In 1988 it opened its headquarters in Mendrisio, where the refinery still operates. Since 2017 it has been wholly owned by Heraeus and part of Heraeus Precious Metals. In 2003 the LBMA appointed it as one of the reference refiners of the Good Delivery programme.

Technology and security features

The ounce belongs to the Argor-Heraeus minted silver line — unlike the bars from 250 g upwards, which the producer casts. The front is struck with the Argor-Heraeus logo, followed by the weight, the 999.0 fineness and the assayer's mark.

The producer has refreshed the design: the reverse now carries a guilloché pattern centred on the Swiss cross, together with a new Argor-Heraeus logo, a redesigned certificate and new blister packaging. According to the producer, the front is unchanged. Older bars show the logo repeated in diagonal rows on the reverse.

Formats and weights

Argor-Heraeus minted silver bars come in three weights: 10 g, 1 oz and 100 g, all at 999.0 fineness. The ounce and the 100 g bar share the same 49.7 × 28.5 mm footprint and differ only in thickness. The 10 g bar measures 31.0 × 18.5 × 1.8 mm. All three formats are packed in a blister of the same size, 85 × 55 mm. Heavier weights, from 250 g to 5000 g, are cast.

What to check before buying

  • The reverse design depends on the batch. Bars in the old design (repeated logo) and in the new one (guilloché with the Swiss cross) are both in circulation. Older dealer listings give a thickness of 2.2 mm rather than 2.3 mm.
  • Fineness is 999.0, not 999.9. The Heraeus 1 oz Classic is 999.9 fine — a difference of about 0.03 g of pure silver per bar.
  • Serial number not confirmed. The producer does not list one and dealer descriptions conflict, so do not count on a numbered bar.
  • Cost per gram. At 31 g, minting and blister costs are spread over less metal than in a 100 g bar, so the premium per gram tends to be higher.
