Palladium — a platinum group metal
Palladium (Pd, atomic number 46) belongs to the platinum group metals. The English chemist William Hyde Wollaston discovered it in 1803 and named it after the asteroid Pallas, found a year earlier. The metal is silvery white, does not tarnish in air and is considerably lighter than gold.
The density difference shows in the bar itself: 10 g of palladium (12.02 g/cm³) takes up about 0.83 cm³, while 10 g of gold (19.32 g/cm³) takes up about 0.52 cm³. A palladium bar of the same weight therefore has about 60% more volume. The main buyer of palladium is the automotive industry, which uses it in catalytic converters for petrol engines, so the price reacts to conditions in that sector.
Manufacture and security features
The surface carries the Argor-Heraeus logo together with the weight and purity. The blister protects the bar from scratches and handling; any opening is visible.
Argor-Heraeus S.A. is based in Mendrisio, canton Ticino. The refinery participates in the LPPM (London Platinum and Palladium Market) system — it has passed the audit under the LPPM Responsible Platinum and Palladium Guidance — and is listed in the LBMA Good Delivery system for gold.

What to consider
Palladium is subject to 23% VAT, so the gap between the purchase price and the buyback price is wider than for gold. Per gram, the 10 g bar carries a higher premium than the one-ounce bar and a lower one than the 1 g and 5 g bars.
The palladium price often moves more than the gold price because it depends mainly on demand from the automotive industry. Current quotes are on our palladium price page.
VAT
The exemption under Article 346 of Council Directive 2006/112/EC and Article 122 of the Polish VAT Act applies to gold only. Palladium, platinum and silver are subject to the standard 23% VAT rate in Poland.

Is VAT charged on palladium bars?
Yes. The exemption applies to gold only; palladium is subject to the standard 23% VAT rate in Poland.
How do 10 g of palladium and 10 g of gold differ?
