A gold bar weighing 2.5 g at 999.9 fineness. It is made by the Turkish refinery Nadir Metal Rafineri, listed with LBMA Good Delivery. One to a few gram bars are usually bought as a gift or a first purchase of metal — the entry point is low, but the markup over the gold price expressed as a percentage is the highest in the range. Two and a half grams is about 0.08 troy ounces. This size is often given as a gift, since it fits a standard blister card together with its certificate.

Nadir Metal Rafineri — the maker of this bar

Nadir Metal Rafineri has operated since 1967 and is based in Istanbul. The refinery joined the LBMA Good Delivery List for gold on 8 December 2011 and for silver on 20 June 2012 — the first and so far only Turkish company accredited by the LBMA for silver.

Bars leave the refinery in a sealed CertiCard blister with a certificate. The serial number struck into the bar matches the number on the card — the primary check on resale, and the reason the packaging should stay closed.

Minted versus cast bars

Gram bars are punched and struck from rolled gold strip. The surface is smooth, the edges are straight, and every piece shares identical dimensions. Cast bars, common from a few hundred grams upwards, are made by pouring molten metal into a mould — hence their irregular, matte surface and slight variation in shape between pieces.

The difference shows up in price. Striking costs more than casting, so the markup over the metal price on gram bars sits higher than on large casts. In exchange a small bar is easier to sell as a whole, with no need to split a holding.

What to check before buying

The blister should stay closed. A bar taken out of its pack loses the link to its certificate and is sometimes valued lower on resale or has to be checked. Gold at 999.9 is soft — a fingerprint or scratch stays on the surface permanently.

In storage, avoid damp and pressure on the edges of the pack. The metal itself does not oxidise, but a cracked or lifted blister is the most common reason for a reduced buyback price on gram bars.
