The Santiago Mint — Spanish heritage, Chilean gold

Casa de Moneda de Chile was established in 1743 by decree of King Philip V of Spain, when Chile was still a colony — which makes it one of the oldest continuously working mints in the western hemisphere. After independence the mint passed into the service of the republic and through the 19th and 20th centuries struck Chilean circulating coins, including gold pesos based on the gold standard.

The gold 100 pesos — the best known Chilean coin

The mint's flagship gold coin is the 100 pesos with the personification of Liberty, struck in the 20th century as a circulating and store-of-value coin: 20.34 g at 900 fineness, that is about 18.31 g of pure gold — more than half a troy ounce. It is one of the larger circulating gold coins in the historic segment, alongside the Mexican 50 pesos (37.5 g of gold). Smaller denominations were also struck.
