1/2 oz Gold Coins
Number of products: 73A half ounce gold coin holds 15.55 g of fine gold — half the metal of a one ounce coin, in a piece that is noticeably smaller but still substantial in the hand. This category lists 23 half ounce coins from six mints, in current 2026 dates, earlier dates and mixed-year lots.
Two fineness standards run through the range. The Krugerrand and the American Eagle are struck in 22 carat Crown Gold at 916.7, so they weigh more than half an ounce gross; the Britannia, Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic and Kangaroo are 999.9 fine, where gross weight and gold content are the same number.
What half an ounce actually buys
Every coin on this page contains 15.55 g of fine gold — exactly half of the 31.1035 g troy ounce. That number does not vary between mints. What varies is the alloy the gold sits in, the size of the disc, the face value struck on it and the tax treatment in the buyer's country.
Half an ounce is the middle of the fractional range. It costs roughly half of a 1 oz gold coin and carries a lower premium over spot than the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz formats, because minting cost is spread over more metal.
Two fineness standards, one gold content
| Standard | Fineness | Series in this category | Gold content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crown Gold, 22 carat | 916.7 | Krugerrand, American Eagle | 15.55 g |
| Fine gold, 24 carat | 999.9 | Britannia, Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic, Australian Kangaroo | 15.55 g |
The 22 carat coins are alloyed with copper, which makes them harder and more resistant to handling marks. The 999.9 coins are softer and are usually kept in their capsules for that reason.
Which half ounce coins carry the UK tax exemption
Only Royal Mint issues. In this category that means the half ounce Britannia, exempt from UK capital gains tax under HMRC Capital Gains Manual CG78305 and TCGA 1992 section 21(1)(b), because it is sterling legal tender. The Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, American Eagle, Philharmonic and Kangaroo are chargeable assets for UK taxpayers.
Separately from CGT, gold of at least 995 fineness is exempt from VAT across the EU under Council Directive 2006/112/EC, and in Poland under art. 122. Every coin on this page meets that threshold.
Series available in this format
Half ounce coins are listed here from the Krugerrand, Britannia, Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic, American Eagle and Australian Kangaroo series, alongside Royal Mint Tudor Beasts and Lunar issues.
Mixed-year lots contain the same metal as current dates and usually price closer to spot. If the date matters to you, the current 2026 strikes are listed separately.
Questions buyers ask
How much gold is in a half ounce gold coin?
15.55 g, which is half of one troy ounce. That is the same in every coin on this page regardless of mint or fineness.
Why do some half ounce coins weigh more than 15.55 g?
Because 22 carat coins such as the Krugerrand and the American Eagle are alloyed with copper. They carry the full half ounce of gold plus the alloy, so their gross weight is higher.
Is a half ounce coin better value than two quarter ounces?
Usually yes on premium. Minting cost is broadly similar per coin, so spreading it over 15.55 g rather than 7.78 g gives a lower percentage over spot. Two quarter ounces give more flexibility when selling part of a holding.
Which half ounce gold coin is free of UK capital gains tax?
The Britannia, as a Royal Mint sterling coin. The other series in this category are chargeable assets for UK taxpayers.
Do half ounce gold coins carry VAT?
No. All of them are at least 995 fine, so they fall under the EU exemption in Council Directive 2006/112/EC and under art. 122 in Poland.
